Review 1 :
The best thing about the Core i7-950 besides its incredible benchmark performance and rock solid overclock ability, is that it's price tag keeps dropping, and with Sandybridge processors just about to enter the market, they'll only get cheaper from here on out. Boasting 4 cores and 4 threads, these are beast CPUs that have to be taken into consideration for any serious gaming rig or video rendering build. I bought this processor on a really nice deal at a local computer store--sorry Amazon but the price difference was too significant--and have been happily enjoying my new computer build for a while now.
OVERCLOCKING:
In a word: easy. If you know something about overclocking older intel chips (dual and quad core 45nm and 65nm chips), you'll find that while some things have changed (bclock vs FSB) many others work about the same, and in particular managing Vcore, RAM timings, and micro-tweaking voltages to get the most out of your chip. There are many, many excellent resources on enthusiast boards that will guide you through the process--just employ Google to get the information you need. Most i7 chips OC about the same, so even a i7-920 guide will get you pointed in the right direction.
Suffice it to say I was able to achieve a solid 4.07ghz 24hr Prime95 stable system with temperatures never north of 78C. I idle at about 45C, and gaming pushes my temps into the high 50s or low 60s. I am extremely impressed with the quality of the overclock, and the relative ease with which I arrived there.
PERFORMANCE:
Stellar across the board. I have a gaming rig with a crossfire arrangement which I also use for video editing, photo editing, streaming media files throughout my house (using PlayOn and several WD TV Live devices). I can play any game I want with the PlayOn media server running, Torrents running, and still not hit 50% CPU usage. Really the only time I use 100% of this chip's capacity is when testing out an overclock using Prime95, or when I run a synthetic benchmark. Real world usage, with the exception of video rendering or other CPU intense tasks, will not use half of what this chip has to offer.
VALUE:
The i7 chips have been coming down in price for a while now, and with the current sub $300 prices on the 950, I can't see a better value out there on an intel chip if one plans to overclock. Why spend 2-3x more for an "extreme" edition chip when you can get one of these and overclock it as high or higher? There are numerous people overclocking these chips into the 4.5ghz range, some of them on air! If you want a great CPU to build a computer around, you'd be hard pressed to find a better option for a 4-core processor.
CONCLUSIONS:
Buy yourself one.

I have no complaints about this product. So far it has performed to my expectations...nice and fast. I have over clocked to 3.86 GHz with no instability simply by clicking a switch on my MSI Pro-E motherboard. BIOS confirmed the speed increase, and temperatures remained within Intel's required tolerances using a Cooler Master V8 solution. To be honest, I doubt if I would spend double the money for the 975 or 965 chips, but I did spend the money for the 950 instead of the 920 chip. Just a matter of personal choice as to what was justified, but I didn't want to go to the trouble of building a machine and then have the processor speed surpassed by market standards in 6 months.
As for ease of installation, it literally couldn't have been easier. The LGA 1366 socket is secure and makes this CPU simple to place and clamp.

I use Zbrush, 3DStudio Max, and Photoshop - all of which are very demanding on the processor. My old PC wasn't cutting it anymore (Core 2 Duo E6600) - especially when rendering normal maps from high-polygon models (it took so long to render). With this Core i7 950 in my new PC, the process of rendering was exponentially faster. What took me several minutes to render now took literally seconds. I've heard that this processor isn't the best in terms of oveclocking ability versus cost ratio, but since I never do that - I have no complaints.

I'm thoroughly pleased with the Intel Core i7 cpu. I've got it overclocked at 3.8Ghz, and I can't believe how powerful and stable it is. All of my games (e.g. Black Ops, Crysis, Halflife 2) are running incredibly smooth and all applications are snappy. I've got a Corsair A70 cpu cooler installed, so my temps at idle are around 40-42C. Under load they don't get much higher than 60-70C. I graduated from an Intel Q6600 @ 3.0Ghz (which I thought was the bees knees at the time). The difference is like night and day. Intel is the way to go. Current specs: Win7 64bit, Gigabyte GA-x58-ud3r mobo, 12gb Adata DDR3 1333mhz, Diamond HD 5870 gpu, Corsair 850wt psu, WD 1 TB Caviar Black HDD, Pioneer DVD rom, Corsair A70 cpu cooler, Antec 900 case, Intel core i7 (of course), Logitech G9x mouse, Logitech G110 keyboard, Samsung 24" Syncmaster monitor 1920x1200 max resolution. It all persistently rocks!

Great chip, great price, a bit difficult to OC, not as easy as the previous reviewer stated, but it is possible to OC. I have running at 3.7 instead of 3.06. Not bad, I think though that the i7 920 can be OC a bit higher and is much much cheaper than this one.
So far, no problems, I've been able to run Crysis, FarCry 2, etc.
My system so far: Cooler Master HAF full tower, Cooler Master V8 CPU fan, 2 BFG GTX285 2GB SLI, 6 Gs of RAM, Asus Rampage II Extreme MOBO. I'm still running XP though, which limits the amount of RAM I can have, with the limit being 4GB, it is hard to fully appreciate my components. I'm waiting for Windows 7, once I get it, DirectX 10/11 will be in place of 9oc and I will be able to use all my RAM.

Can't believe that AMAZON is now asking for reviews of the processor within the desktop computers that they sell. But, it was a major decision enhancer for my choice of PC. Having put this processor to heavy workload in support of video production work, I marvel at the screen gadget that shows CPU utilization when all eight processor are 100% engaged in zipping through tasks that might take several hours with my previous quad core PC, in half an hour. And each core does this while maintaining a temperature in the 145F range without exotic cooling apparatus. You can believe the Intel TV ads they tout the astounding nature of a processor that automatically adjusts to the needs it is presented....even if their small robot feels insulted!!

Let me give you a little analogy. This product has been a pleasure to work with, as everyone has previously said. I got this for about 200 dollars way back at a microcenter. Anyway, right out of the box it was extremely easy to get this up and going. I got a good motherboard for this cpu, and let me tell you it is super fast. I had it running at stock clock 3.4 ghz and it was not too difficult to get it at about the 4 ghz mark, which is what you COULD do. BUT PLEASE, be warned! do not do this with the stock fan. Do yourself a favor and get a proper third party fan to which you could safely overclock this thing. Given that this used to be 600 dollars and dropped to 300 and can even be found around 200 i think its a steal. Given that intel is going to move beyond the LGA 1333 I don't think it would be too risky to jump on this. Besideds, if you are thuinking of going for the 930 it isnt much more expensive to just jump on this. This will last you a good long time just make sure you get a good gpu to go with it and enjoy!

Able to overclock with Intel's Extreme Tuning Utility at "slightly above specs" to 3.6 ghz. Probably past 4.0 with the "aggressive" option, but just in case I dont want to wear out the hardware.
I do a lot of 3D work, and this is a dynamic and fast processor. The 3D renderer takes advantage of the Hyper-Threading and displays 8 rendering cores instead of the 4 I would expect.. A great value versus other high end intel chips ( I paid $300). Look into this or a top end AMD for this price range.
Did not use the standard cooling fan included (overclocking raises temp considerably), installed a simple liquid cooling system as recommended by my tech..which worked out great.
Comes with a nice shiny case sticker :) Just what I was looking for: Blazing speed at an incredibly low cost.

Purchased this processor on 12/20/2010 for $199.99+tax in California for a total just over $217. Great bang for the buck. Super fast and can run everyone of your applications at the same time with no holding back. Pair with a SSD (solid state drive) and sit back and enjoy boot up speeds of under 30 seconds and the fastest processing this world has to offer at this time.
Would recommend to anyone!!!
